Last November, Vietnam pocketed 929.1 million U.S. dollars from exporting goods to the United States, a decrease of 14.62 percent from the previous month.

Vietnam’s export turnover to the U.S. market in the first 11 months of 2009 came mostly from the exports of garment and textile, wood and wood products, footwear, seafood, and crude oil, said the center.

Garment and textile topped the Vietnam’s export items to the United States during the same period with the export turnover standing at 4.51 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 44.13 percent of the total export turnover to this market.

Export turnover of wood and wood products, the second largest export item to the United States, reached 979.46 million U.S. dollars, a climb of 1.91 percent over the same period of a year earlier, said the center.

From January to November last year, the country witnessed a year-on-year drop in most of export items to the U.S. market including garment and textile, footwear, seafood, crude oil, cashew nuts, and coffee.

However, the U.S. importers spent more money during the this period on purchasing wood and wood products, electronic products, precious stones and metals, and tea from the Vietnamese market than the same period of 2008.

Vietnam is expected to see an increase in export this year to the United States thanks to the U.S. economic recovery after the crisis, said the center.

Kenyan police break up demo over Jamaican cleric

Kenyan police fired teargas canisters on Friday to break up demonstrations called by Muslims to protest the arrest of controversial Jamaican Muslim cleric Sheikh Abdullah al-Faisal.

The police shot in the air to disperse the demonstration called by the Muslim Human Rights Forum which had started peacefully in the Kenyan capital Nairobi after the Friday prayers.

The Muslims argued that they notified the government of their intention to stage demonstration in major towns on Friday to press for the release of the Jamaican, who was last Monday forced back into the country after Nigeria declined to allow him to use its territory en route to Gambia, where he had asked to be taken.

They managed to thwart attempts by the stone-throwing demonstrators who were waving the flag of Somali militia groups to march into the Nairobi streets.

Youths waved placards castigating the government’s move to arrest the cleric, whose history of radical statements and connections with convicted terrorists made him a threat to Kenya’s security.

However, the peaceful demonstration soon turned ugly after a confrontation between the youths and police ensued. The police officers were forced to storm the Mosque to flush out the youths, who had sought refuge inside.

Police fired teargas canisters to disperse the youth, who in turn pelted the officers with stones. A huge pall of smoke engulfed Nairobi streets, especially near the mosque, as the two groups engaged in a cat-and-mouse chase.

Several youths were injured in the melee and were rushed to hospital by ambulance. A contingent of security officers was called in to offer reinforcement as the hide and seek battle intensified.

The Jamaican preacher was deported from Nairobi on Thursday following orders by Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang. Al-Faisal, born Trevor William Forrest, was convicted in Britain on terrorism-related charges in 2003 and deported on release in 2007.

On arrival in Jamaica, the Islamic Council of Jamaica banned him from preaching in its mosques. The Kenyan authorities held Al-Faisal at the country’s main airport for the better part of last week as they plotted his next destination.

Kenya had flown him to Lagos, Nigeria. From there, he was scheduled to fly to Gambia and then to Jamaica. But airlines in Nigeria refused to fly him to Gambia.

Kenyan authorities reportedly drove him to the border of Tanzania last Tuesday because he had entered Kenya from there, but Tanzania refused him entry.

On Thursday, Gambia offered to help get him to Jamaica, but now it is unclear how he can travel to Gambia. Muslim leaders and human rights activists said Sunday that they had spotted Faisal at a Nairobi prison.

Proposal for gradual name row settlement will not work

Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski said on Thursday that the idea of settling the name dispute with Greece in a fashion of a gradual way will get no where. sandal shoes

Pavle Trajanov, lead of the Democratic Union inside the ruling coalition government led by Gruevksi has proposed that Macedonia and Greece adopt a three-step solution to the name dispute between the two neighbors.

”Trajanov’s proposal is probably well-intended and I am welcoming it, but considering the talks I have had thus far with Greece, it is completely unacceptable and (the country’s officials)refuse to discuss it,” Gruevski said.

Trajanov proposed that the two countries first settle on a compromise name for international use for the tiny western Balkan country.

He assumes that this would prompt Athens, a member of the EU and NATO to lift its blockades on Macedonia’s aspiration to join the EU and NATO.

The second phase envisages the forming of bilateral committees that would gradually solve each open issue, including the span of use of the agreed name, he said.

And the UN Security Council would step in at the end by voting a deal that would be complemented with all previous bilateral agreements, Trajanov proposed. short ugg boots

Athens and Skopje are locked in a 19-year-long dispute over the use of the name of Macedonia. Athens claims that Macedonia’s name implies territorial claims against Greece’s own northern province, also called Macedonia.

In December last year, the EU postponed a decision on opening accession talks with Macedonia due to the name dispute. Greece also vetoed Macedonia’s NATO aspirations over the row in 2008.

Bank report foresees fixed fortune for Canada in 2010

While the benefits of record low interest rates and huge stimulus packages will drive solid growth in the Canadian and global economies during the first half of 2010, the economy risks returning to sluggish growth in the second half of the year and into 2011, according to a bank report released on Thursday. classic short uggs

The report by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) notes that the actions of central bankers and finance ministers, combined with a rapid recovery in the financial markets, points to a stronger economic performance in Canada and the U.S. in the first half of 2010. But growth could be restrained in the second half of the year as governments turn off the stimulus taps and U.S. consumers continue to deleverage.

CIBC Chief Economist Avery Shenfeld said in the bank’s latest “Economic Forecast Report” that Canadian manufacturing and resources will benefit from the upswing in global growth and inventory rebuilding in the first half of 2010 but will subsequently feel the combined pinch of decelerating foreign demand and an overvalued Canadian dollar. .

The report notes that China might also slow its Treasuries buying if it starts allowing a modest yuan appreciation later this year. With huge deficits also needing funding in Europe, global bond yields will come under pressure. While outperforming Treasuries for 2010 as a whole, this environment should see 10-year yields reach nearly four percent in Canada in a flattening sell-off ahead of the first rate hikes, before easing off towards year end. sandal shoes

”The stock market could get a decent year’s return in the first six months, when year-on-year earnings comparisons will be against the depths of the recession, macro growth rates will be fairly healthy, and resource prices could still be climbing,” he adds.

”While comparable fixed income yields won’t be as low as they are today, the gap between Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) dividend yields and those on bonds is very narrow, and expectations for dividend growth in 2010 and beyond should see yield-hungry investors supporting another leg higher for the TSX.”

The purpose of exercises is to enable the KFOR forces to maintain a high level of readiness and be prepared for rapid deployment in response to any scenario, the statement said.

KFOR was deployed to Kosovo in June 1999, after NATO bombed Serbia to oust Belgrade’s security forces from the territory. The force initially had around 50,000 troops from 39 nations but was downsized as the threat of renewed violence faded. About 15,000 troops from 32 countries, mainly from the Alliance, are currently serving in Kosovo.
